“Don’t Koch Block Public Art”

In Chattanooga, Tennessee there is a mural on the corner of Broad and 20th street that local police are saying is in violation of a sign ordinance.

Koch’s Bakery owner Barbara Davis says that her intent was to brighten up the street corner, not defy a city ordinance. She also believes the artwork isn’t in violation in the first place because “There’s no sign on it that says anything about my name…there is not an arrow on it that points to my bakery or anything.”

It seems that the community has fallen behind Koch’s Bakery in support. Locals don’t see anything wrong with the mural, in fact, some have passed by the building with more frequency just to take a look.

It does beg the question, is this art or is this advertising? Can it be both, or does it have to be one or the other in order to be approved by the city?
